This is where most values walls go wrong, and it is entirely avoidable.
A statement intended to be read across an open-plan office needs letters 4 to 6 inches tall as a minimum. Room names and wayfinding text read from about ten feet need 2 inches. Anything under an inch and a half is close-range text and belongs beside a door, not on a feature wall.
Small, elegant lettering on a wall that people walk past at pace looks excellent in the design mockup and gets read by nobody in real life. We will push back on undersized text, because a values wall that nobody reads is a wall that costs money and does nothing.
Mission statements and core values are the most common request and the one most often executed badly, usually by making the text too small. Founder quotes. Department and room names. Wayfinding and directional text. Safety messaging in warehouses, workshops and production areas. Menu boards painted straight onto a wall in cafes and taprooms. Record boards, honour rolls, and team names in gyms and schools.
Matte, in almost every case. Gloss vinyl indoors catches ceiling downlights and creates hotspots that make text hard to read at an angle, which is exactly the angle most people are walking past at.
Available in any solid colour, plus metallic, brushed metal effect, and frosted. A tone-on-tone treatment, meaning lettering only a shade or two different from the wall colour, is a strong and underused look for a modern office interior, though it needs larger letter sizes to stay legible.
Cut vinyl needs a reasonably smooth surface. On light orange peel, it works with careful heat application and a good installer. On heavy knockdown, brick, block, or any pronounced texture, individual letters will lift at the corners within a year because there is not enough continuous surface contact under each one.
On those walls, we would move to printed wall graphics on conformable film, where the larger contact area holds, or to dimensional letters mounted off the wall on studs, which ignore the surface texture entirely.
