Backdrop Displays and Step-and-Repeat Walls

The largest piece of real estate you own at an event

The back wall of your booth is bigger than everything else you bring combined, and most companies waste it on an oversized logo and nothing else.

A backdrop should do one of two jobs. Either it tells somebody at fifty feet what you do, so they decide whether to walk over. Or it is a photo surface, in which case its job is to put your brand into every image taken in front of it and travel out across social media afterwards. Those are different designs and it is worth knowing which one you are buying.

iCandy Grafix prints backdrop walls for trade shows, red carpets, press events, church stages, school photo days and corporate functions, as part of our displays range.

What we build

Tension fabric backdrops

Stretch fabric pulled over a tubular aluminium frame. Sets up without tools, packs into a bag, and the fabric can be machine washed. This is the modern standard and what we supply most often.

Step-and-repeat banners

A tiled logo pattern designed for photo lines. Print on fabric rather than vinyl unless you want every photograph ruined by flash glare, which is what happens on a gloss vinyl surface.

Pop-up curved walls

The classic accordion frame with magnetic graphic panels. Curved profile, quick setup, and still a solid choice for a 10×10.

Straight wall systems

8ft, 10 ft, and 20ft, modular and expandable, so a 10ft wall can grow into a 20ft wall when the booth size does.

Hanging backdrops

No frame at all, hung from a rail, a truss, or a wall. For stages and venues where floor space is at a premium or a frame will not fit.

Fabric or vinyl?

Fabric, in almost every case.

Fabric travels folded without permanent creases, does not reflect camera flash, and looks like a considered piece of equipment rather than a printed sheet. It is also lighter to ship, which matters if you are paying even freight rates.

Vinyl makes sense when the backdrop lives outdoors, when it needs wiping down repeatedly, or when the surface will take physical abuse. For a farmers market stall backdrop that gets rained on, vinyl is right.

Getting step-and-repeat spacing right

The most common mistake in step-and-repeat design is logos that are too large and spaced too far apart. It looks balanced on screen. Then somebody takes a tight photo of two people and the visible background contains one half-logo and nothing else, and the entire point of the format has been lost.

The rule we design to: any 3ft by 3ft crop of the wall must contain at least one complete logo. That usually means smaller logos, closer together, and often two alternating elements such as a logo mark and a wordmark.

We size the repeat for the actual photo distance where possible, so tell us whether people will be photographed one at a time or in groups of six.

Sizing

  • 8x8ft for a 10×10 booth, leaving side clearance
  • 8x10ft for full coverage of a 10×10 wall
  • 8x20ft for a double booth
  • 8x8ft photo wall for one to three people
  • 8x10ft or wider photo wall for groups of four to six

For a photo wall, height matters more than people expect. 8ft is the working minimum, because anything shorter means the ceiling, the truss, or the room appears above the backdrop in tall shots.

Wrinkles and setup

Tension fabric backdrops arrive with fold lines. They release within a few hours of being stretched on the frame, because the tension pulls them out. A handheld steamer speeds it up considerably.

If your backdrop goes up an hour before doors open, take a steamer. If it goes up the night before, you will not need one. We ship fabric folded and the frame in a case, and vinyl rolled rather than folded, since vinyl creases do not release.

Frequently Asked Questions

The standard step-and-repeat backdrop is 8 feet tall by 8 feet wide, which comfortably frames one to three people. For group photographs, iCandy Grafix recommends 8 by 10 feet or wider, with the logo pattern sized so any 3ft square crop of the wall contains at least one full logo.

Tension fabric backdrops arrive with fold lines that release within a few hours of being stretched on the frame. A handheld steamer clears them faster. iCandy Grafix ships fabric folded with the frame in a case, and ships vinyl backdrops rolled, since creases in vinyl do not release.

Fabric, without question. Fabric has a matte surface that does not reflect camera flash, while gloss vinyl produces a hotspot in every photograph taken in front of it. Fabric also folds for transport and can be machine washed.

Yes, with weighted feet or ballast on the frame. A fabric wall catches wind badly, so anchoring is essential and there needs to be a plan for gusts. For sustained outdoor use, vinyl with a mesh or perforated construction is the safer specification.

Backdrop displays take 5 to 10 business days after proof approval, since the fabric is printed, cut and sewn to fit the specific frame. Order at least three weeks before your event to allow for design and shipping.
