Printed Window Graphics

When lettering has done all it can

Cut lettering handles your name and your phone number extremely well. What it cannot do is show the product, run a seasonal campaign, display a menu, carry photographic imagery, or reproduce a brand identity with gradients and detail in it.

That is what printed window graphics are for. Part of the iCandy Grafix storefront graphics service, and one of the products stocked with a starting price in our online shop.

The materials, and when each one is correct

Perforated one-way vision film

Printed vinyl with roughly 50 percent open area. From outside, the printed image reads as solid. From inside during daylight, you look through the perforations toward the light and see out clearly.

This is the material we specify most often on large retail glass, because it gives you a full-colour campaign across the whole frontage without walling off the interior. Daylight through the treated glass drops by around half, which is the trade-off.

Every perforated graphic we produce gets an optically clear overlaminate. Without it, the holes collect dust and grime within months, and the print goes muddy, and cleaning it becomes very difficult because you are trying to get dirt out of thousands of small holes.

Opaque printed vinyl

Full colour, blocks the view completely, richest colour reproduction of any window material. Correct for columns between windows, transom panels above the door, the section of glass beside the entrance, and any pane where seeing through is not required.

Clear window film

Printed on clear vinyl, so the glass stays largely transparent with the graphic floating on it. Works well for logos, light patterns, and decorative elements. Does not work for photography because anything behind the glass shows through the image.

Frosted and etched-effect film

Privacy plus branding in one material. Standard on medical, dental, legal, and salon frontages, and increasingly used for banded privacy strips at seated eye level in cafes and restaurants.

Static cling

No adhesive at all, repositionable, removes with zero residue. Ideal for short seasonal runs, a retailer intends to store and reuse each year. Less durable than adhesive vinyl, and it needs a genuinely clean, smooth pane to sit flat.

Running window graphics as a campaign rather than a one-off

Retailers who get the most out of window graphics treat them as a rotating programme rather than a single purchase.

The way we structure it: we produce the first set, we keep the artwork and the measured pane dimensions on file, and each subsequent change becomes a print and an install visit rather than a fresh design project. After the first campaign, the per-change cost drops substantially because the layout work is already done and the sizes are already confirmed.

For a store running four seasonal changes a year, this is the difference between an ongoing design bill and a straightforward reprint. Most of our multi-site retail clients work this way.

How often to change them

There is no universal answer, but there is a useful signal. If your own staff has stopped noticing the graphics, your regular customers stopped noticing them some weeks earlier.

Quarterly works for most retail and hospitality. Twice a year is fine for service businesses where the message is evergreen. Anything that has been up for more than about eighteen months has probably stopped generating attention and has started simply being part of the building.

Installation and care

Interior application wherever the design allows, for the durability reasons covered on the storefront graphics pillar page. Glass cleaned with a non-ammonia solution and fully dried. Large graphics were applied wet and squeegeed from the centre outward. Edges sealed.

For cleaning afterwards: normal glass cleaner is fine on standard printed vinyl. On perforated film, use soapy water and a soft cloth wiped in one direction, and never use a squeegee, a scraper, or a pressure washer on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, during daylight. Perforated film is around 50 percent open area, so from inside you see out clearly while the printed image reads solid from outside. Visibility reduces at night when the interior is brighter than the exterior, which is worth considering for businesses trading after dark.

Perforated one-way vision film is usually the best choice because it delivers full-colour graphics across large glass without closing off the view into the store. For short seasonal runs a retailer wants to store and reuse each year, static cling is a good alternative since it removes with no residue.

Printed window graphics last 5 to 7 years when applied to the inside of the glass and 3 to 5 years when applied outside. iCandy Grafix laminates all exterior-applied window graphics as standard, and laminates perforated film in every application regardless of which side it goes on.

Use soapy water and a soft cloth, wiping in a single direction rather than scrubbing. Never use a squeegee, a scraper, or a pressure washer on perforated film, as all three will lift the material at the perforations. Standard printed vinyl can be cleaned with normal glass cleaner.

Quarterly suits most retail and hospitality, and twice a year works for service businesses with an evergreen message. Anything up longer than eighteen months has generally stopped attracting attention. iCandy Grafix keeps artwork and pane measurements on file, so repeat changes cost considerably less than the first set.
