Street Pole Banners

The signage that makes a district feel like a district

Downtown McKinney does this well, and it is worth walking around and looking at what it achieves. A run of matched banners down a street changes how the entire area reads. It signals that somebody is looking after the place, and it works on people who could not tell you afterwards why the street felt different.

It also costs less than most people assume once the total is divided across the number of poles. Part of the iCandy Grafix banners and flags range.

Who orders them

Cities, downtown associations and business improvement districts. School, college and university campuses. Hospitals and large medical campuses with long internal drives. Churches with substantial parking lots. Car dealerships. Shopping centres running seasonal campaigns. Industrial and business parks marking entrances and internal routes.

Sizes and construction

Standard sizes are 18×36, 24×48, 30×60 and 30×72 inches. 30×60 is the most common for main street applications and is what most existing bracket hardware is sized for.

Almost always double-sided, since traffic passes in both directions and a blank reverse looks unfinished from half the approaches.

Construction that survives a year outdoors in this climate:

  • 18oz blockout vinyl so neither side ghosts through, or knitted polyester for a softer look with more movement
  • Sewn pole pockets top and bottom, typically 3 or 4 inch
  • Reinforced webbing along the pocket edges, which is where the mechanical stress concentrates
  • A fully sewn perimeter, double stitched
  • Fibreglass or aluminium rod through each pocket

Mounting hardware

Bracket sets clamp around the pole and hold a rod through each pocket, with the lower bracket usually spring-loaded or tensioned to keep the banner taut.

Measure the pole diameter before ordering. Bracket sets are sized in diameter ranges and a mismatch means a return and a delay. If you are replacing banners on an existing run, measure an existing banner rather than assuming a standard size, because whoever installed the brackets may have used a non-standard drop.

Permits, and this one matters

Most cities regulate what can be attached to a public light pole, and many require a licence or encroachment agreement with the city, the utility company that owns the pole, or both. Some cities run their own banner programmes and will only permit banners produced to their specification.

If the poles are on private property, it is your decision. If they are on a public street, talk to the city before ordering anything. iCandy Grafix will produce to whatever specification gets approved, and we can supply drawings and material data for the application, but the approval itself has to come from the pole owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common street pole banner sizes are 18×36, 24×48 and 30×60 inches, with 30×60 typical for main street applications. iCandy Grafix produces custom sizes to match existing bracket hardware, so send your bracket measurements if you are replacing banners on an existing run.

In almost all cases yes, since traffic passes in both directions. iCandy Grafix prints double-sided pole banners on 18oz blockout vinyl so the reverse image does not ghost through, which is a common problem with cheaper single-layer material.

Street pole banners typically last 1 to 2 years in North Texas. Wind exposure causes more wear than sun on these, so banners on open highway-adjacent poles wear faster than those on sheltered downtown streets with buildings on both sides.

Usually yes for banners on public light poles, and requirements vary by city and by who owns the pole. Many cities require a licence or encroachment agreement with the municipality or the utility. Check before ordering, and iCandy Grafix will produce to whatever specification is approved.

Bracket sets clamp around the pole and hold a fibreglass or aluminium rod through the sewn pocket at each end of the banner. The lower bracket is usually tensioned to keep the banner taut. Bracket sets are sized by pole diameter, so measure before ordering.
