Print the fixed layout in a light tint, not at full strength.
This is the single most important thing on this page. If the printed grid is dark and heavy, marker writing over the top becomes hard to read, the lines compete with the handwriting, and staff quietly stop using the board.
We keep printed lines and structure at 20 to 40 percent tint for exactly this reason. Logos and headers can be full strength, since nobody writes over those. Everything inside the working area stays light.
We will push back if a supplied design has heavy full-strength gridlines, because the board will be abandoned within a month and nobody will be able to say why.
Use quality dry erase markers. Cheap markers and permanent markers both ghost, and ghosting on a printed board is harder to remove than on a plain one.
Clean with a dry cloth for daily use and a proper whiteboard cleaner weekly. Avoid water, which spreads residue rather than lifting it, and avoid abrasive pads entirely.
If a board has been ghosted by permanent marker, drawing over the marks with a dry erase marker and wiping immediately usually lifts them.
